Jablonec 2012: trip report

I spent a lovely 2 weeks in Jablonec Nad Nisou in the Cezch Republic. It was my third visit to this capital of Czech beadmaking. Last year I gathered a lot of information for writing a book on beads from Jablonec. Well, a lack of time got in the way, including due to making another trip and book on beads from Tucson. I hope to finish the Tucson book within weeks (technical stuff to sort out) and the Jablonec book this year.

Jablonec is a great holiday destination on it's own, but it's the beads that make it so special. You can sense the history of beadmaking all around you. You can find stray beads or pieces of cane in the ground, bead shops are stll quite abundant (though more and more are selling Chinese beads) and there are plenty of people with stories about beads and glass.

One of my previous posts on my 2011 trip can be found through the link.

In 2010, the image on this wall was from the seed bead manufacturer in Zasada. In 2011, it was under construction. And in 2012.....?
Have a look at the next post.

I visited Zasada, and when driving with the local bus through the curvy roads it was clear where we had to get off: the big chimneys of the factory can be seen from miles away.
In the post WWII period it was part of the State company of Jablonex. After the communist era, it was a seperate company for a while I believe, and now it is part of Preciosa, the main producer of all glass coming out of the region.

As you can see: the chimneys are not the not the only thing giving the location away......

I only got to go into the bead shop attached to the factory, not the factory itself. Also, lots of security and cameras around. Still hoping to get to see seed beadmaking live one day. I asked for some of seed beads in their collection, only to find they did not have any. Apparantly most of their beads are all made to order. I wanted what preciosa calls 13 beads (tiny, tiny) but they were only available in 2 colours. The salesclerk told me that unless a big order for more of these beads comes in, they will not be made again.

This is the book of sample glass colours from the Riedel company from 1935. This was a difficult time for the Riedel family business. As most of the glassmakers in Jablonec, they came from German descent, and were also called Sudet Germans. During the rise of the Third Reich, many of the Sudet Germans were keen to see the Third Reich expand to their part of what was at the time Czechoslovakia. In 1938 the area, Sudetenland, did become part of Germany. However, it was not the time for fancy glass and bijoux, and the industry slowed down. In 1945, when the Germans lost the war, there was a backlash against the Sudet Germans. Most of the glassmakers of Jablonec fled the area or were forced to leave. They left behind their factories and their art deco villas. A lot of them started their work again in Neugablonz (meaning: New Jablonec) in Germany.

The Riedel family is one of the major names of Jablonec glassmaking, and many types of glass are accredited to this family. A famous example of this is Uranium glass. While there is evidence this has been made before, it is said that Josef Riedel first produced this glass on a larger scale in the 1830's. He also gave the main colours their names, as a tribute to his wife Anna: Annagelb (Anna Yellow) and Annagruen (Anna Green).
The work of the Riedel family dates back to the early 18th century. After a tumultuous period from 1938 tot 1946, the Riedel heirs once again started making glass in an old factory in Tirol in 1954.

I found this book at a local antique shop from Jana Ullmannova. She herself is a bead and glass enthousiast, and was keen to share her knowledge with me. She also has an online bead shop with both old and new beads. You can find it at the link. (all in German, I am afraid)

A few more notes on the glass sample book:
You can see that the transparant colour have a differently shaped button than the opaque colours. I have been told that the transparant colours buttons have this shape so that it can be see what the product looks like in both thin and thick shapes. For opaque colours that does not matter so much, so they are a simpler shape.

Unformtunately, the last pages show a decay with a mold. I have seen this in quite a few of the older sample cards. The glass will last for ages, but it is always the paper and the strung that decays first.

From what I understood, the system of numbers for glass types have been pretty consistent during the whole Jablonex period, and these numbers are indeed still used today. Sometimes another number was added at the end of the number, to add more colours in the same range.
The S numbers will probably be Riedel's numbers from before 1945.

I think that you will find that in all numbered samples, the colours 8013, 8100, 5080 and some others are all uranium glass.

I have a booklet from Preciosa 2000 that shows all of their 'special stones' and I also have some sample cards from earlier dates with the same stones. The numbers all match.

There are numbers for each type, each shape and each colour. If I find the time I hope to digitalize all my sample cards and this booklet as a resource. But right now.....I really should be working.

I would agree on that, since we dealt with the Czech for 25 years, the numbers are the same; it would be very confusing for everybody to be otherwise. The "S" is probably an abbreviation for Standard.

To be specific, in their inventory each bead has a its own number with a size. The beads can be ordered (for many of them) in other sizes.
There are 4 digits for the color glass and 5 for the more complex glass. If a coating, a lining or any type of decor is added, there is a slash following the color number with the decor desired.

What is amazing is the variety of colors, 871 total which are in their repertoire of pressed beads on file (year 2010). If you want to choose from the 2,480 different decors/coating/lining they offer, you have theoretically 2,160,080 possible combinations to play with.

The Czechs are the most prolific in this industry. I am sure that would be a gold medal in this category.

There is also a smaller sample booklet with 4 plates in our museum, which has a different display of colors and the numbers are different with an S in front.
The book title is "Standard glass colours" and there is no date, the booklet is not in very good shape but the colors are wonderful
We found it in a shop in Venice in the 1980s.
Great find Floor yours must be a more complete book

From the notes in yours, I would think that this one is probably from the 1930's or 1940's, and certainly before the end of WWII. It looks like it's design was copied for the Jablonex version that Thomas and I have. The Riedels were then no longer in Jablonec, as they were expelled and some even imprisoned. But the factory was still there, with the molds and the techniques.....

BTW: I do not have the large book that I have shown here. Unfortunately, it was not for sale. I probably would not have been able to afford it anyway.

As I already wrote in a previous post, I asked the museum curators about saphiret glass. I will do some further digging with the information they gave me, but here are some pictures from examples the museum has.

This piece is a neckpiece that was designed in the 1980's (or 70's) for a specific Jablonec bijoux event. The piece is therefore fairly new in design, but the stones are at the latest from 1945.

Saphiret is very difficult to photograph.

I have tried to find saphiret beads, but they appear to be even more rare than the cabochons. The last antique dealer I asked said he did have some stones or beads in that type of glass, but he had no clue where.
He pointed at the stacks and stacks of stuff in his shop and wished me good luck with trying to find them.

Sorry for the huge prior photo "Attack of the Saphiret Beads". I hope this one comes out smaller. These beads are the early ones and are generally darker brown with the blue highlights most evident when you hold the beads up to the light. There are also 40's/50's round saphiret beads that are generally lighter in color- Hobe used them in their necklace designs and fairly often can be found for sale online.

The cut saphiret beads in the ebay listing mentioned at the start of this thread were spectacular.

Because it had the small pieces of Venetian millefiori cane in it. I had seen it before at this antique shop, and got the bag to sort out the little cane pieces.
Speaking of millefiori beads....

Here are some millefiori beads that were offered to me by a third little antique dealer in Jablonec. I asked about old beads, and these are what he came out with. I know the Czechs made (and make) beads with millefiori cane on them. However, they are usually of quite a different design than the Venetian millefiori beads. For as far as I know, they did not copy complete Venetian beads. So I believe these to be Venetian beads from the early 20th century that found their way to a Czech shop as part of a glass deal or through some other way?
Any thoughts on these?

The second picture are a set of marbles that were bought at a local marble/glass speres shop. Apparantly, there are competitions of games with marbles. Teams and players will often have their own signature marbles made. These millefiori marbles were part of a unique lot commissioned by a local marble player.

We love these pieces! Here are some more, recto-verso. Those not marked with a country of origin may mean that they pre-date 1892, the year when the law requiring the marking of the country of origin went into effect. Those marked "Made in Austria" were probably made in Jablonec when it was called Gablonz and was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, before 1921.

The first piece is part of the Sachse collection, a glass and bijoux exporter from jablonec whol lived from 1851 to 1921. He collected a great deal of 'exotic objects' from all the places his company traded with. The result is an impressive collection. This necklace is an interesting example, where an egyptian style bead from Jablonec is mixed with a variety of beads. It is unknown where the necklace was put together.

The second piece was brought back by a local seed bead producer from Jablonec whilst on a business trip to North America.

Floor - this report you have written is absolutely outstanding - you are such a great researcher!!! For what it might be worth, the bead-covered head in your second photo here is made by the Huichol Indians of the northern part of Mexico. They use Peyote as part of their cultural ceremonies and are quite famous for these bead-covered objects. The beads are pressed into warm bees wax. Thanks again for all your work in doing this research of beads from Jablonec. Paul

Thank you for your kind compliments.
I recognized it as Huichol through some previous discussions on here.
The curator wrote it down, as it was new to her.
It was quite fragile, though. Even from me carefully picking it up, it lost a few beads.
Imagine how red my face got.......

Last year I found out that during the communist era, when too much glass items were produced, they would be discarded into the foundations on building yet to be built. It would be done both with bad lots that had faults, but also with overproduction. This was a way of disposing of the glass, and keeping the prices up. Apparantly, when a power plant was built in the city of Liberec, bordering Jablonec, wagonloads of glass waste were taken into the city by train to put down at the foundation.

Below are pictures of a place were I could see this for myself. The first picture shows glass bits in a pile of dirt at a construction site. The second picture shows some of the glass I recovered from there, including whiteheart tubes yet to be made into beads.

Uranium glass canes

In the end, I managed to get 4 different uranium glass canes. The first one was bought at a Prague market. It is opalescent 'annagelb' and can be seen here while being transported on the local bus.

The second and first were classic annagelb and annugrun, both full size rough canes. All three of these are probably from the 1950's. They are one their way to me know by post.

The fourth cane is a smaller piece, and thinner than the others. It shows at the end it was probably used for making molded beads.I think it could be anywhere from 60 to 10 years old. The outside is annagelb, and inside is a green that is not uranium glass.

These pictures were taken at Fipobex. It is a place in Pencin, near Jablonec and hosts a weird mix of a bead factory, a museum of old farming tools, a little tourist train through the mountains and a goat farm.

There is even a street in Jablonec that is called 'Bead street', or Koralkova. Here is a picture of the sign, and the street. Not the fanciest street, but still......

They also have a 'Button Street'.

Walking around the outskirts of the town I came across this scene: an old vessel where the rough glass used to be made in, filled with sand, glass beads, glass scraps and cigarette buts. On the floor was more of the bead/glass mix.
There was a sign at the door indicating a beadmaker, and the big chimney that goes with it. Besides the vessel was a white marble tombstone, just on the sidewalk, which appears to me the grave of someone from the Klaar family. This was also a major producer of beads and buttons in the early days.

When it comes to lampwork beads, there are quite a few very fancy Czech beads, with filligrana, roses, satin glass and aventurine.
The source of these beads is a specialised glass/bijoux antique dealer who knows his stuff. It is a different seller as the one I got the Venetian millies from. This seller had not a clue about beads.....

Wondering about something: These Czech lampwork beads usually still have some white residu in their holes, even older ones. Is that the same for this type of Venetian fancy beads? If not, that could be a way of telling them apart......

With a loupe, I can peer clearly into mine and see the pink cord, no visible residue - didn't notice any when I restrung them, but to me that doesn't mean they aren't Czech - they have had a lot of years to have had the residue cleaned out of them, I'd think.

Wow, this is such a great report, I keep reading and re-reading it - excellent excuse for a coffee break!

Recently I've been looking at "wedding cake" style beads rolling around in my boxes, trying to discover which might be Czech instead of Venetian. They're all older than the ones made in India that past couple of decades, so that county of origin isn't an option.

I know to look for white release as a Czech clue, if the beads haven't been cleaned out...anyone have some other clues?

Possible Czech beads seem to have a tighter and more precise decoration and construction - the "petals" in the forget-me-not motif are all nice little pentagons and not scattered all over the place, for instance. But maybe some lampworkers are just less casual than others...

I remember a discussion on BCN on glass snakes from the Czech Republic. If I remember correctly, Russ at one point pondered having them made from old molds. I found these new ones at a bead shop. They are made with 4 types of molds: one for the head, one for a thick part of the bosdy, one for the thin part of the body and one for the tail. Fun stuff.

The last pices was found in the ground by Peter, at te site I mentioned before. It is like a medaillion of the German author Goethe. As it turns out, it was made in 1941 as part of an annual 'winterdrive'. These drives were held every year during Hitler's reign and would help collect money for the poor. It was called WHW Winterhilfswerke, aka winter relief. Especially young people would go around collecting money, and these medaillions were given in return. Every year there would be a different type of commemorative item in a series. In 1941 it included these glass pieces of Goethe, Schiller, Mozart and Hitler. They would always be made in the Jablonec region.

From looking at Thomas' and my glass samplecard book, I wanted to figure out the date on the Jablonex logo.
And when I just visited their website I was thoroughly surprised. I knew that Jablonex was pretty much finished as a business. It had been declining gradually since 1989 when they lost the monopoly. I also knew that Preciosa had taken over most of the current production.
What I did not know is that in the last year Jablonex has completely stopped as a brand for beads and glass. On their website it now states Jablonex as a real estate company, looking for companies to lease and buy one of their many many buildings. You have to know these buildings are huge and completely dominate parts of Jablonec. There is for example the main 'Palace' of Jablonex, which sits on Palace Street, which is being rented out. It had been sitting mostly empty for the last few years, but it still surprised me.
Anyway, the website also has a long list of the equipment that is being sold off. They hope it will go to local glass and bijoux businesses, but overseas buyers and even collectors are also invited to buy things like huge tumblers, hydraulic presses, catsing equipment and to top it off......the crystal chandelier from the reception area.
