I recall discussing this with Mark Kenoyer in the early 1980s. Apparently, the Romans learned about using diamonds on drill bits from India, and took the technology back to Europe. The Romans were active in India as early as ca. 200 BCE.

I suppose Mark's more-recent investigations may have moved the time of Indian exploitation to an earlier period. But this is not a topic that rolls out of my brain. JDA.
