I was digging through some beads today looking for something and came across a few stone beads I have questions about. I am not a stone person so any input or additional information is appreciated

First up this large carnelian bead I believe I got from Hans of the Hills about 25 years ago.

1.Would this bead be considered a pema raka bead?

2.What kind of age would a bead like this have?

3.True or false campfire story. Beads like this, in this size where used for decoration on horses or other large animals.

Size 77mm x 44mm at its widest points

Thanks
Wayne

this looks like pema raka, it would be nice to see smaller pictures and the perforations. Judy

the pema raka that I've had are not this shape, flat on one side, and the holes are different. But, I've had pema raka of all shapes and sizes and I haven't seen them all. There was a discussion on BCN about pema raka recently. An Internet search could prove interesting.

No idea about these. I am pretty sure that they came from the West African trade.

Questions:

1. Type of stone, guesses?

2. Possible ages?

3. Are the shapes significant in anyway, have meanings or cultural significance.

Sizes 32mm x 15mm and 33mm x 10mm at widest points

Thanks
Wayne

Here's just one search from the BCN archive....get a nice big cup of coffee...

The one I used to have (now happily residing in another forum member's pile) also has a flat-ish back side. That is how they are sometimes shaped. This bead is slightly under 2 ounces - huge.
