(Edit: I've posted about 8 more photos on this thread, and thought I should mention these are all over an inch in length, closer to 1.5 inches)

This will, by necessity, be mostly 'show' and not much 'tell' on my end. I'm in early stages of learning.

I found a few very similar to some on Picard's site, I include that # where appropriate, (not that I think these are matches, it was more an exercise for me to familiarize myself with the beads). But...we never know!

I have 'group' shots and 'individual.'

I have two large shoe boxes full of these, I'll have a lot more to post a later date. Many on twists of dried grasses.

Here we go! Any and all input is greatly appreciated. For all I know these are reproductions, or not even Venetian. Thanks for looking!!

This one looked like No. 20 on Picards. 7 Layers: from center, blue, white, blue, white, blue, yellow, black.

All trade beads made in Venice, late 1800-s to early 1900's

You may want to buy the Picard's series of books, which cover significant parts of the beads made in the "hey-days" of the Venetian and Czech trade bead era. They can be purchased on their web site.

While it's always nice to find the exact bead on a web site, there were probably hundreds of thousands of patterns produced and there isn't a single source that documents all of them. So your "beaducation" should include handling lots of beads and learning to recognize the old ones. This forum continually updates people on new reproductions - it is a constant learning process - and they are getting harder to identify.

Welcome to the wide, wide world of bead collecting!

top, stripes and rows of concentric circles
bottom, smaller yellow one
(all that I've pictured so far are more than 1 inch long, except this smaller yellow, it is about 3/4 inch)

Haha, 'group of elbows' sounds pretty funny to non-beadaholics!

Hi Vicki,
All your beads are venetian and trade beads which we could buy on the african markets, but today they are more and more rare. These I see, are not reproductions. Most I see here are millefiori. You have to follow the Rosanna's advice to buy the Picard's books. You are here, on the good site, to have many explications, exchanges of advices, and so on...it is very nice! Welcome!!! Please, it's better if your pics are clear, net!!
You can also buy the Dubin book which can you give a good appreciation of the bead's history in the world. It's like the bible for the bead collectors! You have many other very good books like "Collectible beads" of Robert Liu (Ornament)- "Middle Eastern and Venetian Glass beads" of Augusto Panini (Skira), "Perle Veneziane" of Pauline B. Maruscutto (NED). You have also few recent books of Floorskap which are also very good: "beads from Germany".
More and more......but it's a very good beginning.
That is what is fascinating in the collection of beads: it is to discover that beads accompanied the evolution of the humanity by their different roles during this evolution, the progress of process techniques during the history, the history of the business, the using of the beads in Africa .... The history of beads in Africa is fascinating and very different from the history of beads in Asia, for example!!!
Good luck in this fascinating world!!!

Kika, much thanks to you and to Rosanna for letting me know these are genuine Venetian. I did take the advice and ordered 2 books by Picard (V and VI), and Dupin's History of Beads.

Coincidentally, while searching for the Dupin book I ran across this site (I tried to link it). I was surprised that I have almost every bead on the this strand and the next. It's fair to say I'm hooked. Thank you, again.
