Thank you Joyce. There are some wonderful beads in the collection. Dave Mort knew Naomi fairly well and told me she had an outstanding collection. I made note of the large number of Ban Chiang glass beads and the rare glass bead strands from Taiwan. I am curious to see the results, because I wonder, in these times of recession, how many people are going to be spending thousands of dollars on strands of beads. Again, thanks. Naomi had pretty good taste!

Hi Brian, Yes, Naomi was perhaps one of the earlier American collectors. At least here in California. She was a young flight attendant in the 1960s, going to exotic places in the world, and had a curiosity to seek out what others couldn't even imagine......she wore some of the loveliest Jatim beads I'd ever seen one of the few times I had the occasion to meet her, at one of Jamey's talks for the N. Ca bead society. Jamey designed most of her necklaces. I feel that this auction will draw bidders from far and wide, and there will not be a single thing I personally could afford. But it will be very educational to go down to Alameda on preview weekend and view the treasure just the same. I find it strange that the auction is on a Monday. But maybe they feel most of their bidders will be absentee anyway...

I have to say, what I'm really taking away from the listings (before the website crashed) was that Jamie is really a beautiful necklace designer! Has anyone else mastered the gorgeous macrame that Jamie uses? Abe

It's called "crowning" - remember the flat plastic cord we learned to make keyrings with when we were kids......it's the same technique but using multiple strands of bead cord, finishing with macrame. Jamey taught it to Jewels and to Abbey. Jewels still presents many of her necklaces using the technique - she has probably taught a number of artisans to use it. I think Abbey still lives in the San Francisco bay area and as far as I know she still makes necklaces for Xanadou gallery (SF) and a number of designers in the collector and tribal show genre in N. Cal. Now it is taught as a class at bead shows, too. Rosanna learned. Jamey showed me the technique, I did a number of sample lengths, but I find it demands much, much patience!

I'm so pleased to know who did that work. I was just speaking with Jocelyne Okrent about that yesterday! I don't typically like any fancy stringing, but every one of those necklaces is so perfectly designed and beautiful. He did ALL of those? Wow! That is alot of work, but it makes the beads truly shine. Lynne

One needs to register in advance, so as to be ready. The auction is live on the site, so you see bid-by-bid. I watched the Lewis bead auctions this way, on the live auctioneers site.
