Each visit to Tucson is a little different from the others. This time, the first few days were lovely, fairly warm but dropped by 25 degrees. Rosanna and I arrived bright and early at 2:30 a.m. 1/28 on the Amtrak train from NorCal and spent the day at The Gem and Jewelry Show on Grant. Always excellent with world class dealers of collectible, antique and ancient beads! We also visited the show at the Howard Johnson, the Pueblo show, the Gem Mall, and African Village. It was great to see my African trader friends from 10 - 15 years ago (how time flies!) when I used to sell on eBay. Not only do I miss those times, I miss those prices.

Tonight David did a few nice images for me of the sweetest of my 2016 "finds"....

A gift from Saibo Tunkara at the Gem Mall, a nice pink 7 layer Chinese chevron, circa 2008. About 25mm x 30mm. These were never as plentiful as the standard colors and are generally not around anymore. Thank you, Saibo!

I had a nice visit with Kamol and Becky from Seattle. They do 2 bead shows a year in our N. California area, and shows all over the U.S. The first time I met Kamol was at the fondly remembered Marin City flea market, approx. 1994. Their setup at the Gem Mall is nice and large, with a varied selection of everything from ancient beads, Thai silver, nice quality new ethnic beads and wonderful Thai raw silk scarves. And more! These brass beads from Nepal with coral chip inlay are very neat - they are pleasing to the touch as well. About 12mm x 15mm.

I've heard about Leo for a long time. He used to sell at the Bridger rendezvous and at Tucson. Last year was his first time back to the big T in about 12 years. His room was stuffed with beads! There just isn't enough room to display everything but one is welcome to dig through the wooden boxes laden with product. This is for those with time and patience and an understanding of what they are pawing through. I'm hoping that at least one of Rosanna's pictures of Leo comes out okay. He is a most authentic looking character, with a kind nature and a sparkle in his eye!

Two green nueva cadiz, and a lovely strand of 5mm x 5mm clear "Russian" cut beads (clear versions of "Russian Blues") not seen (by me!) with an African trader in years were discovered (surface finds) in Leo's room. They are approx. 13mm x 25mm. The green NCs were at the bottom of a wooden box of.....eerrr....stuff. Always dig to the bottom.

Livin' the Mountain Man life - Leo Hakola is a gentleman and bead lover, and we had multiple visits to his store in the 6 days we were in town.

More photos coming later - still recovering from the cold I picked up!

You had some really bad luck with that nasty cold. I'm hoping mine will not get this bad. We'll be in touch soon about SF when you feel better.

There are many dealers of fabulous, desirable beads at this show, including Danny Lopacki, the Ethnographic Group (including Ancient Beads and Artifacts, Tasart,, David Ebbinghouse, Bernie Lawitz, Indra, Miranda Crimp, Mickey Cane, Bill Boss) Tiger Tiger and others. It is still a small show, but growing a bit each year and if some of the very best are in a nice relaxing venue, who can possibly not enjoy being there?!

I've been more curious about the lovely 1930s Boshan (Chinese) millefiori beads in recent years. I was really rather dazzled to see these beads from the Summerfield collection displayed by Jamey Allen in the ballroom with the Ethnographic Group. What a splash of color! I will knot them simply on black cord. Approx. 12mm x 12mm.

Some may remember the first image, fresh home from Tucson 2014...I was fortunate to be able to purchase a very unique ancient agate bead from Mr. Seymour. This bead bowled me over the second I saw it.

Here is the informative text from Yankee at that time, accompanied by the first image...the "before" image....

Yankee's comments:

"Regarding your bead, I am pretty sure it's from Persia from the Seleucid period,300-200 BC. Seleucid was one of the generals of Alexander the Great and when Alexander died, the vast territory that he conquered was divided in between all of his army commanders. Seleucid got the chunk of Persian region. You can see a very strong Greek influence on the shape of the bead. They used to have lots of buds, acorns, etc…
The bead in the photo is upside down. The bottom part , which is the widest side of the perforation, probably had a gold cap on it. It was one of many identical graduated ones. Judging by the size of your bead, it was probably the center piece or close to the center.
I have seen a half necklace with the gold caps in Jerusalem but it was not for sale."

I've studied and enjoyed this bead quite a lot over the previous months...and after being very, very impressed with the design aesthetic of David Ebbinghouse and his jeweler friend Michael Winsten realized that they were the perfect people to approach about a suspension design to support this bead. Top of the suspension loop to tip, approx. 47mm x about 20mm across.

I am so pleased! I will be wearing this for quite some time; as in forever. Thank you so very much Art, Yankee, David and Michael.

I remembered it from last year, so I recognized it. It did not click as to what had changed, but that is indeed an amazing setting.

Unfortunately, lots of viruses follow the throngs of bead lovers to the Big T. A number of folks that we know were hit this year...one had to curtail his trip in San Diego and head back. Rosanna lost 2 days of shopping while there...Ann has been home sick...I held out till tonight...I think I'm getting Colin's cold. My m.o. is to stay okay while there and then get sick a day or so after arriving home.

Welcome home, Joyce!

If you completely disregard travel expenses: The beads you bought and the friendships you rekindled were well worthwhile.

I really like the Boshan Chinese millefiore; It is wonderful to see intact a group of old beads which have usually been parted out. -And the color distribution is very pleasing.

Congratulations on all of this and the successful mounting of your ancient Persian agate bead.

Just Fred

The Tucson trip is all of this and more. There is always this feeling that I will "miss something" if I don't go. Even though what I get to experience is one tiny corner of the whole.

Yes! Seeing "bead buddies" that one doesn't see at any other time or place, resulting in contacts made here on BCN, for example, is a huge part of this. Most of us don't get to interact in person with other bead folk much in day to day life.

At first I thought I was just tired, but I picked something up too. Nice coughing and achy All over. Slow day today, because I need to be fit for the Flame Off. That means I'll probably take some time for a BCN post as well.

Still feeling under the weather, but spent a few minutes on photos from the show.

First is a killer strand of fancy blue king beads - seen at Alhaji Kaira's table at Gem Mall. Way out of my price range...but wonderful to see a whole strand of these rare beauties.

Second strand of fancy barrels from Leo Hakola's room at HoJo's, and this one did go home with me!

The loveliest trade bead item to be seen at the Gem Mall this year, in my opinion! Thanks for showing them!

One of my favorites too! I wear them to work at our shop, along with my Nueva Cadiz, on my "blue days!" I was shocked by what the strand was selling for..... I was gifted, by my lovely wife, with some beautiful beads from Bernie's collection. Here are my new friends....
