Hi all. I'm back looking for some help and prepared with more info this time :) Here are three beads that seem similar in style to me. They came off of a strand I purchased from an estate of a couple of world travelers who spent lots of time in Africa. I have broken this strand apart and am trying to ID the beads a little at a time. Will sell some and keep some samples (don't need multiples of the same bead).

On the left is a bead about 11.5mm, the bore holes are uneven, one is about 3mm and the other end is about 4.5mm. The center has very uneven grooves and looks like dried clay.

The bead in the center is slightly oblong, 9.5mm from hole to hole and 10.5 mm in diameter. These bore holes are also uneven, one end being about 4mm and the other about 3.5 It has the same characteristics inside as the first.

The third bead is almost 5mm from hole to hole and 9mm diameter. Same core characteristics as the other two.

Any thoughts?

Beads Old or New

Here is part of about a pound of blue "padre" beads I bought at auction thinking that at least some of them were old. The only thing I can say in my defense is I didn't pay very much.

They vary too much in size, shape and color for me to give much info other than some appear very weathered and have some pitting and some are very shiny. Any thoughts? Maybe some are oldish?

Thanks,
Mel

These were also purchased at auction. They were thrown into a box lot with some sterling jewelry and bone beads. They appear to be metal that is oxidized or antiqued. They are not very heavy but don't seem to be hollow, I ran a pin around inside them and they seem to have solid cores. The are irregular shaped rounds and some long tubes with a turned spiral groove. Aluminum?

Thanks for the help.
Mel

Hi Mel,

These are the beads routinely (though inaccurately) called "padre" beads. As mentioned many times, they consist of wound and molded beads, possibly Prosser beads, mostly from Czechoslovakia/Central Europe. They are most likely from the 20th C. Occasionally, some strands may include slightly older specimens.

I think the last of the three is "A Speo" after searching through past posts. Early 20th century Venetian?
