The easiest way to determine whether this is dyed coral (whether bamboo or not), would be to break a bead and determine whether the color is superficial. Not all dyed coral is bamboo coral (!).

If you are willing to break a bead, stand it up on a firm or hard surface, holding with your left hand. Insert a needle that is slightly thicker than the perforation channel; and with your right hand, use a small hammer to strike the needle. The bead should break in two or more pieces, allowing you to see inside.

Go back 9000 days, up to 300 days. There is very good past discussion. As with anything bead related one can think of….kiffa beads…dzi beads…chevron beads. The site search is a super archive.

Hi Joyce,

Since I use the Search function quite a lot, I was surprised that you mentioned going back 9000 days—since you can get back to the beginning of this platform in 6,500 days.

I just checked, using "dyed coral"—and got the same result with 9,000 and with 6,500 days ago, for the earliest mention—this being a post you composed in 2005.

J.
