A friend inherited these beads from her grandmother who came to the US from Ukraine in 1912. They do not appear to be glass.I inspected perforations carefully. She was told by her mom that they are rose quartz but the color is much deeper than I have seen rose quartz to be.

They do actually look like glass to me. The way the darker lines are positioned is consistent with would glass. Many glass typed are not completely one color, or they have a variation in how transparent they are.
If they are wound glass, I would think they are most likely Czech or Chinese.

The picture shows a variety of wound beads, made in different ways. See the pink one? It is Czech and is quite similar to yours.

in my opinion they are not wound because only one seems to show any striations, or strata. they could be a stained chalcedony of some kind, or carved in a similar way out of a glass block.
what do the ends and holes look like?
