What are these black beads called?

I have a very few beads like the ones on the left side of this strand. (I snagged the pic from Scott Seaman's site at http://coincoin.com/)

Unfortunately, this strand has already been sold. I know the "gear" beads on the right are Czech, but what are the ones on the left?

They are not those Prosser flower heishi, they are much "rougher", as though pressed with a rod to create the flutes, rather than molded.

How would they be described?? Fluted? Lobed?? (When I described them to Scott, I think I said they looked like squashed pumpkins.) (Probably not a technically correct descripion.) :^D

I never saw any before a month or so ago, and I want more!

Hi Luann,

Lots of beads do not have specific names. Perhaps most of them.

These are squat melon-form glass beads. (That's a description, and not a name.) They have some congruency to what are popularly called "dog tooth" beads—though "dog tooth" beads generally have a crude white band around the equator. This is not a name that I like, and I have no idea where it came from.

I think you are correct in describing them as "fluted," "lobed"—and as "squashed pumpkins." Perhaps not their professional name (!).

JDA.

Why do you want to give names to all beads? I confess I do not understand why you give names to all beads. It gives no information on their origin or their history. What interest?
I try to understand.

I like bead names because it makes it possible to find specific types online with less searching. Names make it possible to have conversations without the beads being present.

Yes, I understand: but it's not easier when you're a stranger because we do not know these names.
What is pineapple, and melon, gooseberry, butterscotch, buttermilk and ......!!! Miam miam!!!
But it's nice!!

It's frustrating to do multiple searches while guessing what they might be found under. Especially if they already have a "common" name, like "ahale chevrons", for example.

If they HAVE a common name, that makes them easier to find.

But, if like Jamey said, they don't have one, then I have to go with descriptions. And hope I'm describing them the way a seller might.

I was wondering if they are of recent manufacture. Do we see these on Venetian bead cards?

Anyone know?

Luanne, I sent you a message :)

They are Venetian sample cards from the Conteria, not dated but from the early 1900s

Nice to know I might find more!
There's a seller on Ebay, but they are pricier than I've seen other (already sold) strands for. Ugh!!

These are also short discoidal melon beads—but not the same beads.
