As most bead collectors know, our hobby is full of wonder.....I wonder if I can afford that bead, I wonder if the bead is authentic, I wonder if the bead is repaired, I wonder if the bead is worth what I'm paying for it....Yes, it is a wonderful hobby! We learn about glass techniques, about stone cutting and drilling, about cultures and civilizations....we learn about history, geography and if we have to buy stuff we learn more about math! We soon see all types of diverse individuals with like minded pursuits, they can be competitors or allies or both! We learn new words and bits of foreign languages, we find similarities and differences in other cultures and peoples. All in all the path we chose can be an adventure worth taking! I love what I do and for the most part I love the people I meet along the path. I have some super friends that now span back over 30 years, friends I would have not made had it not been for the beads!
We also get connections over the years, some super connections and some we wish to avoid. As we get deeper into the hobby, we get offers from sellers that find us on forums or social media....some of them legit and others by people we should avoid at all costs!!!

The attached photo is an interaction between a potential seller and myself, the seller sought me out, I did not know him before the photo he sent me....I tried to test him when I saw his picture....remember the beads he is selling for $2,000
PS (I may sound a bit rude in my responses but there is a reason behind that)

Any way this can be incorporated into the BC.net opening page?
Or engraved in letters of gold somewhere?
OK, it's a bit wordy for a T-shirt, but...

Yup, Facebook makes exploitation of all sorts very easy...both honest and dishonest...be careful...how long FB gets away with no government intervention remains to be seen. At least eBay is a straight-up sales platform. FB began as "social media" but is now largely a "sales media", tax free for now...while Mark _ucker Berg has his mug on the covers of magazines as the current golden boy....he may eventually get taxed/fined righteously...

Meanwhile, on old BCN, twice as old as FB and entirely member-supported, (w/ searchable archive going back many years and a measly 1400 registered users and not umpteen gazillion) still requires photo editing skills and at least some written communication skills. And no damned "like" button, and still a super resource for bead information.

I realize there may be some weird coincidences here, but I feel it necessary to point them out. The same person trying to sell beads all over the place happened to pick me? Is this what's known as Karma?
I don't want to belittle anyone trying to do good in beads, I am at fellow bead people's disposal at any time...but I don't agree with blatant and pushy misrepresentation....

this is what you call YOURSELF an expert?
the bead i showed you is ceramic and the other bead is more likely a glass
i'm really happened to be shocked by YOUR non sense analysis

anyway world is watching YOU and YOUR expert analysis as well

Thanks for expressing so succinctly what I thought but never could have said so well. My rather small collection of beads that I cannot live without have been chosen for various reasons- some for beauty, some for age, and some for the cultural context. There really are too many factors to list as far as why I am drawn to a certain bead or strand of beads. Sometimes for value, and like others in here I have bought a whole strand just to get one particular bead. I enjoy being able to wear a strand of say small 7 layer chevrons, and though they may be valuable, they are not ostentatious like a gold chain might be. The only one tearing them off my neck might be another rabid bead lover.

An old well traveled bead with a good patina, worn holes from being strung around someones neck, etc. opens my imagination and I think of the context of this bead as far as history, how it was made, and the person that wore and cherished it. Really, monetary value is only a factor in my love for a bead.

It's sad to realize that anyone could be phishing around various forums and excluding certain input from anyone that could bring an opinion that evidently does not say what he wants to hear. Everyone in here was nothing but nice. I think it's fine to raise suspicion and call someone out when it's warranted. I felt stupid for being so supportive, and then as this evolved I got really miffed by the apparent manipulation. I shouldn't be surprised, but I was.

Even the bead world has a creepy underbelly, and there are plenty of beads out there made to look old, plenty of copies- some really good- to fool the less experienced, and plenty of Sellers that deliberately mislabel and way overprice beads and strands. I don't have a problem with someone using new Chinese chevrons in a necklace design to save money, so long as they are labeled as such.

Thanks for the extra diligence and information. I will stop cussing now! Well I'll try..
Anne

Buy beads, not stories...

but incredibly, stories that have nothing to do with the beads, such as folktales about where they were found or from whom you bought them (whatever the beads are), do well to pump up value. So what if you bought them from some Cherokee?
