Ok, this is vague, but I am gonna ask as I think that someone in here surely knows about this and can recall the accurate details and the reference information. Long ago I read about a jewelry designer from the time span ~1920-1960's (not sure) that had incorporated pieces of old Roman mosaic glass (broken pieces of beads??) into pins/jewelry she/he was making. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Can anyone clear up my probably inaccurate memory and fill in the blanks please? I have a vague memory of seeing a photo of one of the broaches that incorporated a chunk of the old bead in the design. I'm also thinking it may have been a DZI agate (broken) rather than a Roman mosaic fragment. Thanks for your help. I know this will ring a bell with somebody in here. This is truly a question for the faithful Bead Lovers, LOL! Many thanks!

EDIT: To be more clear I meant Millefiori fragment

If anyone else has a memory of these pins and where I read this I'd appreciate it. I know it's a long shot.

went on a Google image search and found this lovely site along the way...borrowed this image to show -

http://www.jewelsdujour.com/2013/11/the-intricate-art-of-micro-mosaics/

There are dealers, auctions and auction houses listed on the above site that could prove helpful in the long run, I haven't even explored it yet.

I searched Google images for

jewelry using ancient mosaic glass fragments

While it may not produce answers, it's still a fun ride -

Cool, thanks. The way I recollect this Pin from my old memory banks and from a photo with info was that it was a piece of Roman mosaic glass- like millefiori (not so much tiny mosaic pieces). It was maybe put into a rather inexpensive maybe brass setting with some other embellishments. The message was something like these were made as maybe costume jewelry pins and if you were lucky you might stumble across one in a second hand store. I just remembered this part of the story.

The micro mosaic pins have always fascinated me and the example you pictured is fabulous! Thanks for your help!

Have seen and handled them, but don't own any. The ones I am thinking of are not broken beads but flat pieces, very ornate, will try again to locate some image/images. (Not the inexpensive re-ground irridescent monochrome shards that hit the market 5 or so years ago.)

Came across an image of a brooch from a shard said to have been Ptolemaic, made in Cairo...

Fantastic pinterest link- much enjoyed. Meanwhile keep eyes peeled in the 2nd hand stores, Antique jewelry displays, Flea Markets and Yard Sales for these elusive pins! How exciting would it be to find a rather odd piece of costume jewelry and realize that the glass design was actual ancient Roman millefiori! I know some of the Egyptian Revival jewelry used some actual old faience scarabs, so I always try to look for hidden treasures!

Would love to see your brooch made from shard..

Thanks!

Well, here it is but I am afraid I've done what I hate that folks do all the time on Pinterest, etc.....they sometimes forget to provide proper linkage back, but at least there is a "watermark" on this image that may help to trace it....

Getting closer- I think somehow the shard or broken bead (?) was surrounded by other ornamentation- like you might see in costume jewelry. But in the meanwhile this will do nicely! How beautiful!
Thanks, Anne
