I inquired a few years ago here about Ethiopian fluorite beads (NOT Ethiopian opal) being so scarce.

I figured that at some point, they would get more popular, or easier to find.

But I've been looking again, and they are still impossible to find.

I've posted the two pics I have, including one strand I bought. But I would love any information on why they are scarce. Maybe they are actually something else, and so my searches go nowhere....??

Thanks for any insight or suggestions. (I will try to quit whining about coated Czech glass beads in return.) :^p

Guessing cheap Chinese fluorite beads flooded the market

China has some major fluorite deposits. Plus it's a soft stone and easy to work. IIRC, mineral oil (and maybe some other filler) is used fill in the holes and give it a shinier, more polished-looking surface. Also has perfect cleavage, which makes it susceptible to hard knocks, but nobody seems to care.

Looks like Chinese fluorite looks very different.
