Two beads. Three quarters of an inch, 18mm, in height. High carat gold and ivory. Late 19th century. Meiji era, Japan.

If you were to see these in person, the flaws would not be so apparent and the details may appear to be a tour de force. They are small but powerful.

I am a big fan of detail and realism in beads and art in general. By comparison, I prefer paintings by Vermeer over Monet, for example.

A friend says:
"All I see when I look at Ojime is that it takes too long to look at them!"
My response: "You look too fast!"

There is no hole through the monkey. The cord would be passed between the arms and legs. Three quarters to seven eigths of an inch, 18-20mm, in height. Fabricated multi metal monkey. Inlaid ivory. Late 19th century. Meiji era, Japan.

Hey Fred -- it's been far too long since we've had a good Ojime thread! A couple contributions from me! A cloisonne version and a "Deruma," which is "traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism" and token of good luck.

Two more - a lovely Ivory Three-Faced Ojime, and second, my personal favorite -- a multi-metal Persimmon, complete with bug and hole in the leaf!

There really aren't very many fine ojime. But the few really good ones seem to have created a good reputation for all of them.

I suspect there simply weren't many wonderful ones to begin with.
