New Borneo copies?

Decided to start a new thread on the Borneo bead questions-

While cruising eBay I found an ad for cufflinks with "Borneo beads". These appear to be modern copies of the "pineapple" design seen on Venetian beads from the trade bead era (second photo). Note that the color scheme is not copied exactly.

I have a small group of Indonesian "tributes" to Venetian bead designs (thanks, Floor!) and when examined in person, they are obviously not antique Venetian beads.

So I still think nearly all the beads on CoinCoin's strand are Venetian- made but would have to examine them in person to be sure they are not very recent, excellent knock-offs.

How many are? Which ones are?

Though "many" - as you say - is a relative term, I respond the same way: Many are NOT Venetian.

Still good to get some definite information - thanks!

June 2020

The easiest answer to the question asked is that the preponderance of "Borneo beads" that actually were made at Venice, is much larger than most people suppose.

I would be more inclined to say "SOME are not Venetian." And this would include beads from India, Germany, and Czechoslovakia. and, of course, some ancient beads (mostly from the Islamic Period—but routinely believed to be "Roman," or "from the Queen of Sheba").

And this is a topic that can be discussed on a bead-by-bead basis. However, the topic is approached in my 2010 paper for the Borneo Bead Conference.
