In this group of photos, I shot a selection of fancy beads from one row of the horizontal display cases in the museum. I think there are ten rows total. Then there are vertical display cases above all the horizontal cases. The beads on display include fancy, millefiori, chevron, stone, metal, shell - pretty much a comprehensive collection of beads traded to or made in Africa. The following are just a selection of images taken from ONE of the rows. The number of different Venetian fancy beads on display is truly staggering. Every time, I visit, it seems that there are so many types of beads that I didn't see before...we all wished that the museum was closer to San Francisco so we could visit more often.

Rosanna,
Since it just wasn't my day to take a lot of images, I'm really glad that you did.

What a great show.
The pictures your took are great. Not that easy with the glass cases. And, how about visiting every 6 months (hint, hint, I'll be back in SF in 6 months )

thank you Rosanna and Joyce for the great pictures and sharing your trip. It must be amazing to see all those incredible beads in one place. I'm thinking that this is probably the only bead museum in the world to display beads like these. John and Ruth have taken a passion and turned it into a monument! They deserve an award.

Well, if you plan it in the middle of January.....you might just be able to join Rosanna and me for another Picard trip, and catch my lecture at the Bead Society.

Although John will open the cases for closer inspection. Unlike the displays in other museums, these display cases are set at the perfect level for close inspection, and the lighting is excellent. By comparison, I found the displays at the now-defunct bead museum in Arizona to be very frustrating. There was a lot of glare from the lights, some of the lighting was very poor, and the beads were too far from the front of the case to be able to see the details in some cases. Not so with the Picard's displays. A great deal of thought went into creating the exhibit space. It is bead heaven for sure!

I wonder whether John and Ruth would allow me to camp out there for a year... Still I wonder if that would be enough to take in all the specials they have.
Everytime I go back to your pictures I discover another special I had not seen before. So yes thank you for these great close-ups!
