Hi,

I am new on the Forum and I am also new in beads. I am getting more and more interested and trying to build up a collection.

I have acquired attached beads in Mali and would like you to assist in identifying them, if they are old, new, antique, the type of beads they are, and any other information you might have on them.

I have taken several pictures in order to show them on their best angles.

Thanks for your assistance.

Here is a response from Jamey - he tried to email you but it bounced back.

Hello AFranck, At the link below you will find a Search Result, in which I discuss new beads from Java that copy ancient beads rather successfully. I am reasonably certain your beads are from the same Javanese beadmakers in Jember--though they may be somewhat more recent.

Your beads look very new, and have not been given the routine "artificial aging" (in acid) that is typical. In my opinion, this is a good thing.

I hope you did not pay a price that would be expected for authentic ancient beads. If you did, you were ripped-off.

I hope this is helpful. Jamey D. Allen

That large link provided by Jamey continues onwards to many additional interesting past posts...I wonder what his original search criteria was. For new viewers, searching past pages of this forum will provide much bead info and entertainment.

Hi Jamey

Thank you for your response which is quite instructive, so all these beads would come from the same source in Indoesia?

Would you also please advise what would be the range of price to be paid for these beads if they were authentic ancient beads, this would tell me if i have bee ripped off or not, :)

I do have other beads which i will get to the forum to get the valuable expertise from you, this will assist in building up my knowledge on the beads and give an idea of what i am collecting.

Best Regards Franck

The 3 round beads on the left are imitating ancient Islamic period beads from Fustat. Retail value on one in good condition is probably approaching 600.00 U.S. Maybe more. Others may have more current info on that, however we are not really focused on evaluations on our site, but more on age / authenticity. I see nice Java repros, though not these exact designs, sell for approx. 10.00 in Tucson.
