A'dam 'de duif ': traditional jewelry and textiles fair

Although it technically wasn’t a ‘bead show’, it was my first and I loved it. Adrenaline sky high, not knowing where to look first, no longer knowing what I intended to look for. I was in good company : Karen aka kraaltje my partner in bead crime and Ward my partner in all crimes, and as we moved along we recognized Floor, Peter and Hendrik (not accidentally at the Beadbrother’s stand!) . By the time we met for lunch we got to know new time BCN member Nel and of course Roger aka Faqrun.
I am posting some pictures, rough cut and I hope Peter and Floor will add some more. I think Nel took some as well.
Hopefully you’ll feel the vibe. It is a rather small venue, with a friendly atmosphere in a great setting. Ward’s opening shots give you a glimpse of the architecture.
I’ll add some more pictures tonight.

That was a real mix of original and less original/new mix. But prices were for some - probably less known- items in the same range. I made a bargain there.

I was not really impressed by the bead quality offered, but maybe I am too picky: the quartz , the carnelian, the shell ... Of course this is my humble personal opinion only. I was a bit upset that the amazonite sold was in reality a mix of amazonite and steatite but the owner would not budge and did as nothing was wrong. He did not even want to discuss about it. My conclusion: he knew it all too well. His 'amber' was phenolic resin ... but he had some nice small Mali and Burkina bronzes, ... and I am sure many other things but I couldn't be bothered anymore. It was a nice looking stand though.

in the Afghan Art Gallery there was a mix of newer and older. Some real nice textile pieces, very pretty old gold earrings, good quality for money big Afghan silver beads... unfortunately not for me this time. I know I might regret it.

Anuschka Menist had some great ethnic jewelry collection pieces at fair prices. Unfortunately I don't have good pictures of her stand and my pockets were close to empty.

Well there were more stands, but I did not spend that much time there and forgot to take pictures: a Touareg stand (mostly newer jewelry);another Afghan stand with some impressive and very expensive coral and etched carnelian, but mostly with newer stuff; a vintage jewelry stand; and Art Deco jewelry stand....
But of course there was one stand that - independently from one another- appealed to all of us, like bees to honey: the Beadbrothers.

The Beadbrothers along with Ethnocraft (offering finished tradebeads necklaces, of which I have no pictures) are the only stands that were exclusively selling beads/necklaces.

The pictures are of the Beadbrothers' stand: this was the 'old Indonesian stuff' section. If I listened correctly: most to be dated around 6th century AD. And yes we we kept on coming back to these.

Everything on the stands (the necklaces) were old genuine beads. Lying down were the newly made Indonesian necklaces. Some were extremely cleverly made and could have fooled me easily! Sorry no detailed pictures made. Too busy to discover them. This was my first face to face with Indonesian beads, old and new!
I was amazed how much the old blue jatim eyebeads resemble the ancient Islamic eyebeads. My friend Karen happened to wear an Islamic eyebead necklace and the resemblance was immense. In a couple of weeks, I'll try to make some pictures of both so that you can see what I mean.

I think I will leave it to this for now. Tomorrow some pictures of the BCN get together at Nels.

The second picture shows some beads that Max from the Beadbrothers would be pleased to hear some opinions on. They may be Islamic era, they may be Hebron crumbs? The orange glass on there seems to have some swirls in it. Interesting beads.

Hendrik brought along this very special necklace, which I think is Czech. The tiny metal faces are just charming.
He also brought a very cool gift for me, which I will show later.....it is now still at Peter's house. A part of an original sample card with two Czech necklaces from the Egyptian revival period!

It makes me happy that you all went to this show in Amsterdam! Although a textile show, it looks much more fun and interesting from a bead / ethnic jewelry perspective than our bead shows in Northern California these days. Wish I could have been there! I love seeing the photos!

Just to clarify: it was an ethnic and antique jewelry show.
Previously, the organiser set up two shows each year. One for jewelry, one for textiles. The textiles show has been cancelled, and 'included' in the jewelry show. It meant there were a few dealers of tribal textiles, but only two or three.

It was very nice indeed to meet you all "in levende lijve".

For me it had been a while since I bought some ancient beads and it was to hard to resist the jatims from the beadbrothers, this being the first time I saw a selection of what they had to offer, I'm sure it's not gonna be the last time either. So enjoy. Dimensions are 18x22 and 19x21mm.

Thanks for showing them, Hendrik. Floor's and Martine's photos of the Bead Brothers' table already made me wish I had been there. It was good to see them too - I've enjoyed dealing with them over the internet on several occasions and I'm sure it's even better in person.

These ancient jatims never cease to amaze me. The recent copies and adaptations are pretty amazing too, but they don't have the presence of the old beads. I've been in Java a couple of times in the last year and spent a few days in several of the places where they are still being dug up by local farmers. I'll try to find time to take some pics and post them in the next little while.

All the best,

Will

Here are a couple of photos I took already for something else I've been writing. One is of a slightly unusual red green and yellow twisted bead - medium size, about 15 mm. The other is of a larger bead (similar to one of yours, Hendrik), which was found broken. It seems to have been lying in close proximity to some iron object, which had completely disintegrated over the intervening fifteen hundred or so years. I don't know enough about chemistry to know if the iron might have contributed to the breakdown of the glass. In any case, the fragment gives a good idea of the structure of these beads and of the almost porous quality of the glass in the core.

Cheers,

Will

I am just discovering jatims and although they miss the translucency I have seen in the Islamic beads you find in W-Africa, they are very intriguing. Thanks for showing the picture where you can see the core. Do you have more jatims I could find in the archives, if not could you show some more? Thank you.

Hi Will,

Here's another small jatim bead(12x15mm) that seems to have no core. The glass in between the yellow is almost clear and is hard to catch in a picture. Wonderful beads indeed, looking forward to see more.

In about 1993-I sold these four original ancient Indonesian beads to a collector/friend, Ben Thompson. Soon after which our very own Rick (Rotten)Rice acquired them, nearly two decades later I re-acquired them back. I am sure you all have some similar story?

Hi Martine,

Here's a close-up from another repro. They are nice looking beads from the technical point of view but don't have the same feel as the ancient ones. On top of that they are not annealed and have cracks. Impossible to say how long they will survive or withstand the tension inside the glass.
