Hi everyone! This is from the German-owned collection I mentioned earlier that was passed down to me.

I'm stymied by this necklace. I'm ALMOST sure it's Venetian but that's all I know.

...it's OPAQUE, so it CANNOT be a SOMMERSO, right?
...is there a TERM for the swirling of different colors, it's subtle on these, but up close, oh my, how gorgeous is that?
...is that GOLDSTONE inside, or CLUMPS of aventurine?

I found one exactly like it in image search, it was white and referred to as: genuine Venetian Vintage Goldstone in White...

Thank you! ~ Vicki

As far as I know there is, in glass bead making, no difference between goldstone and aventurine.
Aventurine was not only used in Venice but in NeuGablonz too.
What you have shown of the collection what's passed down to you, I recommend you to consult the books of Sibylle Jargstorf. "Glass Beads from Europe" and also "Baubles, Buttons and Beads".
You will understand and appreciate your collection more.
Have a lot of fun with your beads and show us more!

Thanks Hans! I'll look for those books on amazon. I'm so enjoying the 'research' of the beads. I just became aware of the Neiger Brothers and had to review this collection, and sure enough it looks like I have POSSIBLY 3 necklaces, either NEIGER or 'inspired' by them. And then went on to read about what happened to the brothers Max and ... oh dear, can't remember his name. It's another way to absorb history, should be taught this way in schools instead of memorizing dates! :)

It is aventurine. For lack of a better word these are marbled versions of the sommerso style. They come in many shapes and colors but all have the marbling effect. Yours is an extremely nice vintage Venetian piece!

Thank you Paigar! 'Marbled' does describe it. I really love the look of these, and it is wearable in that it's flatter around the neck.

Goldstone is another name for Avventurina glass- it can be supplied in chunks like a gemstone ready for cutting or ready for fine trail-decorating lamp work beads, but both are glass with the coppery flakes or granules. your gorgeous beads with the stamped metal caps are fairly typical Venetian. the effect would be achieved with a plain transparent or opaque glass bead covered with irregular chips of orange and avventurina that are melted smooth on the surface, like brown sugar on a baked pudding...
Chinese or indian beadmakers sometimes carve Avventurina glass.

the first pic is a bracelet from India, the second is trails on top of Venetian millefiori graduated beads made as a set for jewellery rather than trade in Africa...

drawn faceted beads with avventurina stripes, and 3 millefiori trade beads which include avventurina within the decoration rather than on top...

(i recommend the term Avventurina in Italian because there is also a popular natural green stone called Aventurine...)

Thanks for that great description on how the beads are made, I could really visualize it and wrap my head around it for once. Everyone has been so generous with their expertise, I appreciate it so much.

Stefany, I love those beads with the trails you pictured, so gorgeous!
