I'll talk to Danny about them a bit more, but I do not think they are Idar-Oberstein. All of these are drilled from two sides. Most Idar-Oberstein beads, except for the really long ones, are drilled from one side. Also, I think the hole is big for Idar-Oberstein beads. Whether they are ancient, I do not know.

I have posted beads similar to these on the forum more than once stating that I felt they were much older than Idar Oberstine. Every time I was told NO those are Idar beads so this is why I said what I did. I thought my beads dated to at least Roman empire or later, this said I may have sold many very old beads for far too little because I listened to the experts.
I will show Floor tomorrow more than a few beads attributed to Idar that in fact are drilled from both ends, I will post the results.
All my best ........... Danny

when i opened my bead shop in the '80s/90s there were so many loops of the badly drilled agate beads coming out of India -called Beggar beads, on thick nylon fishing line- nothing else would go through.
usually a mix of shapes- square sections, rounded tapered triangular sections and roundish
with thread "knots" between. they did not include the crisply faceted ones in your first messages though, which i feel are european, and older...

What I have been told by the people in Idar-Oberstein is that generally, their beads are drilled from one side, with only few exceptions. So I would indeed like to see yours that appear to be Idar-Oberstein, but are drilled from both sides. And to see if the hole is also as big as the one posted first.
I remember us talking about the quality of the agate, and whether Idar-Oberstein was able to produce such high quality stones. To that, my answer is yes: they made very high quality cut agate beads, made from Brazilian agate.

Just looked at one of my Idar-Oberstein beads (that I got from Idar-Oberstein itself, so no doubt about their origin) and it is drilled from two sides. Sometimes it pays to have a second look.......

I always have thought that holes that are drilled from one end are narrower at the exiting end. That holes drilled from each end narrow in the middle. If the hole goes straight through does that mean it's drilled from one end? I've been having this discussion with a customer and would love to know the answer.
