They look like they are individually carved. I would think they are jet beads.
In the link is a site with various tests. I think the 'streak test' is the easiest.
Yes they do appear to be individually carved. I'll try the streak test in the morning - though I should note that they are quite heavy.

they very much resemble 1920's carved beads of something like casein that i have a few of-
jet has a certain lustre i don't see on these, and its quite difficult to carve-
definitely try the streak test...rather than the tooth test...
gently. Tap one of these photographed against the same tooth. Note the comparison - this may rule out or confirm.....
I've scraped and tapped. No mark, feels like stone.
I'm back to thinking obsidian and wondering about origin.
