It was great to make a pilgrimage to Tucson once more!

First, a super nice condition strand of matched small antique Venetians, from Degumay at African Village.
Next is a long strand af antique Venetian .” squiggle” decorated beads. They’re rarely seen in the African trade, and mostly went to Central America.

Dog Bones and Teal Stripes

Could not resist these dog bones from Saibo Tunkara at Gem Mall! They are not made with Rosetta ( or star molded ) cane, but are solid white glass with blue stripes. I have a smattering of other dog bones, but none of these yet and they were a fun find.
The old layered teal striped beads were simply still pretty despite their crackling condition, from Degumays tables…

Both old molded Czech glass..the long bicones would be newer, yet not seen much. The tiny “ Vaseline” beads were made by molding on a tapered mandrel and thus the hole is tapered. I only had one molded Prosser lions tooth till Rosanna came by these. Great find! I believe that Floor found these in the Bapterosse museum at Briare, France some time ago.

I posted some info on Geiger counter tests I ran on beads made from uranium glass, in 2019.

Try this link or do a search for "uranium".

Very, very weakly radioactive, but I suggest you limit wearing uranium glass beads to around 40 hours / year. There is no hazard being in the same room with them unless you are spending a lot of time closer than 12" to your beads.

Somehow I wound up with a whole carton of uranium beads that glow spectacularly under UV light.
Fun . . . but hopefully not dangerous.

Until they light up an intense uranium green under UV light.

Perhaps I should plan to be buried with these pounds of beads, in the interest of mummification? Might be kinda fun to have a radioactivity warning label on my coffin?

The luscious matte beads are contemporary Venetians from Glory of Beads. The big orange one is by SUV, a firm that closed end of 2022.
The vibrant multi color chevron was ground from cane from the 60s or 70s, Russian blues are antique Bohemian.

The black pair came from Kissima Drammeh at African Village, rare and cool.
The juicy handful in the bottom image came from Thomas Sticker’s Trading Post and Bead Museum, just opened last summer in Prescott. The quartz crystal, from the Sahara..5 special twisted small antique Nueva Cadiz AND a few precious hand made ( by Alan Curtis) gem silica beads wrap it up! Rosanna, thanks again for editing and posting, this takes time and I very much appreciate that you could do it.

Contemporary glass work from Venice, plus a 15th century Venetian bead. The latter is tiny, about 8.8 mm, and the decoration is a cane insert, one of three around the equator.

These are from Glory of Beads - actually got the bead from them 5 years ago. Neat stuff!
And that little round decorated bead - kind of enigmatic, according to Thomas- contemporary with the tiny 7L chevrons that went to Peru…

Regarding the small blue bead with sparse millefiori—three points:

1) I would want to know how the bead was made, and whether it might be an a-speo bead (which would place it in the 17th C.).

2) Pizarro entered Northern Peru in late 1531 (the 16th century), bringing with him Early-Contact beads consisting of chevron beads, Nueva Cádiz, and millefiori beads—the latter being extremely rare and distinctive.

3) Over the previous four years I have continued to be exposed to early trade beads having been recovered in Peru. I have become convinced that this corpus includes beads made as late as the 17th C. (such as a-speo beads).

So, for these reasons I would question a "15th C. origin" for the bead we are discussing.
