I bear the sad news that our friend of many years, Hermon Baker of Yone Beads in North Beach, San Francisco, has passed away this past weekend.

I first went to Yone Beads in 1970. It was one of the very first retail stores completely dedicated to beads (sometime between ca. 1960 and 1963). Everyone knew Yone, because he was quite a gregarious and flamboyant character. Hermon was his business partner, but always seemed to be in the background.

In fact, I didn't really become friends with Hermon until Yone passed away. But I always considered him to be a friend who was there.

Yone Inc. closed about four years ago, after an unexpected disaster in the building, caused by a burst waterheater. Although efforts were made to restore the shop to remain in business, circumstances prevented that—and they were essentially forced to close. Hermon continued to live in the apartment he had shared with Yone for forty-something years, above the store front, and was still there until the day he passed.

I could not begin to recount the memories I have of interacting with Yone and Hermon. There are too many. Hermon's death is truly the end of a very interesting era—that spanned the Beatniks through the Flower Children (of which I was one), through the Punk and Goth years, into the present.

Anyone who wants to read an interview with Hermon from 2008, that recounts a lot of the history of San Francisco, and North Beach in particular, can find the text here:

Hermon was in his mid-to-late-90s—and I think can fairly be said to have had a full and interesting life. But he will be missed by those of us who loved him. RIP Hermon.

I thank my best girl friend, Lisa Jones—who was Hermon's best friend, for our long talk yesterday, when she told me about his death over the weekend—and for the photos she passed along to me shown here.

Jamey

Hi Jamie - thanks for sharing. The name didn't ring any bells for me, but I totally recognize the pictures! I wandered into his store one day while I was in San Francisco. There were so many treasures secreted all over the store - it was just a lovely experience and the gentleman behind the counter was wonderful.

It's always tough running a bead store, but with the pandemic it's really, *really* tough right now. I wonder how long any of the retail outlets are going to survive. But seeing those pictures certainly brought back a very warm feeling of a wonderful store experience!

Thanks for letting us know Jamey...

I was very fortunate to have been introduced to Hermon and the Yone's bead store in 2011. I was rather slavishly acquiring Venetian trade beads at the time, and Hermon had many trays of singles and small groups of them, as well as full strands. I made quite a few treasure-hunting visits to Yone's over many months until I had fully picked over his inventory.
Hermon was always a cheerful host although once he fell asleep in his chair while waiting for me to finish up my selections. Since he was around 90 at the time, it was understandable, and I delayed waking him up for as long as I could!

Here is a photo of Hermon showing off some spectacular Venetians, from July 2011. The photo was taken by Frederick.

Thank you Hermon for your dedication to the bead collector community - you will be missed!

Thank you for letting us know, Jamey. I visited Yone Inc quite a lot during the 1980s.. Yone, Bertha, and Hermon were quite the team. The little store was packed to the ceiling with all sorts of mostly vintage treasure. From what I remember, Yone had been a dress designer in the 1950s, and his clients wanted custom jewelry to complement their garments... and the rest is history. Janis Joplin was a customer - she was known to incorporate purchased beads along with salvaged beads from old costume jewelry..

Hermon was a knowledgeable and fascinating bead person. Treasured memories! If not the longest lasting retail bead store in the U.S., I suggest that Yone may hold the record for the retail bead store In the very same location for the longest period of time...and for it’s entire run.

On my first trip to San Francisco after we moved here late in 2014, I tried to visit their shop. It was already closed, probaby very soon after the waterheater thing, and I never got to see their store.

I did take a picture of a chalk painting on the sidewalk near them (In front of the store?), beautiful koi fish. But now I can't find it!

They both must have brought so much joy to other people!

The chap who did the sidewalk chalk drawing of koi fish is fairly well-known in San Francisco. I have met him. He has drawn these fish in many places in the City—and their popularity made him a bit of a celebrity.
