A friend sent me these images of a glass bead uncovered during the excavation of a basement in Vienna. It was found with material dating from the 18th-19th C but looks much more modern and could have fallen in from a much later layer above.

The bead is 2.2 cm long and 1.8 cm wide. It is furnace wound. The applied orange blob exhibits what looks like a human being or demon(?). My feeling is that it is 20th C and came from somewhere in SE or South Asia.

Has anyone seen anything similar and knows its origin?

Hi Karlis,
Hereby a sheet from my database with a similar bead in my collection.
As far as I know the bead is from Purdulpur, India and not older as the 20th century. Two different colors of glass moldpressed around an iron mandrel.
I think the god Hanuman is pictured.
If you need better pictures, I can make them and sent.

i think i have seen some (not sure if i have any in my collection) which resemble a sealing wax blob on parcel string with red one side, black the other. if so they are probably from Purdilpur like Hans' example...
