Happy Sunday everyone! Hope everyone is healthy & virus-free!

I got these small elbow beads on a mixed trade bead strand. At first I thought they were decorated (somehow) in Africa, but then I found the bead on one of the 1921 Sick Co. catalog pages - thank you to the Picards for posting the catalog pages on their web site. I've reproduced the page here.

It doesn't show in the photo, but there are traces of gold foil bands in places on both beads that correspond to the catalog image. They are not in the greatest shape, but I've never seen this bead before so I'm happy to have them. An interesting use of crumb decoration.

I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this bead and has any in their collection.

I have a bead similar to G4955. Bought in the '70s.

In my opinion, the decorations on these beads are enameled. Fused in a muffle furnace.

Do you think the gold bands were applied in a separate operation?

I’m trying to picture how many different operations were needed to get the final bead - the ones with the crumbs plus gold bands.

I don't know (!).

The few beads I have do not have any gilding. So this is a topic I have not considered. The bead I have is similar to the beads Stefany shows. J.
