Vintage beads, apparently long out of production. While I was stringing some in sunlight, I noticed that the outer layer of glass is actually colorless.

Under magnification, there appear to be 5 layers - ruby, ruby, colorless, ruby,and colorless. When split, the junction between layers appears sort of milky (see vertical lines in photo of split bead).
