“Throw the money for good luck”, reads the label just below the beads and cleavage on a curiously carved wooden Witch (Baba Jaga) in Kazimierz, Poland, a small and beautiful village dating at least to 1181 AD..............
Hi all, just got back from an extended trip through Poland and parts of Germany.......I kept a lookout for beads and bead related material but our schedule kept me out of the big cities and large museums, hopefully the little tidbits I garnered will entertain or inform some of you. Thomas

In Lublin, Poland I stumbled accross a Bead maker set up at a crafts fair. He was using what appears to be an converted spinning wheel to turn Amber beads, here is a sample of his work.....

Not only was he making beads but he was also selling them.....the beads he was making were very limited for sale, as they take forever to do, but he had a good supply of commercial grade necklaces.......

In Poland, poverty is the norm, but very nice coral beads can be found if you look real hard...I found these in a type of consignment shop where some unfortunate souls possibly had to put them for some extra money.......most of the coral I saw was imitation and was used in ethnic regalia, but real coral shows up every now and then, mostly family heirlooms I am assuming......BTW the Polish word for bead is Korale meaning Coral

In the previous post, the larger strand of coral beads was from the African trade, I put it in the shot to show the difference in sizes and workmanship....................Here we see a little granny at a farmers market, behind her is a Beer advertisment sign showing a costumed woman wearing coral beads...............

I agree Logan, and the demeanor of the people was always happy, which added to their colorful ways......even though the average person in eastern Poland or western Russia make just a couple of dollars per hour they were some of the most giving peoples I have ever encountered.....it seemed they are content with life and happy was the norm, not the spoiled, overindulging attitude we deal with daily here in the states.....for me it was a wonderful eye-opener!

in Warsaw's old town, I spotted a bead plaque on the side of a renovated building, I don't know if the beads represent anything (prayer beads?) or are just a nice decor.....

Welcome back, Thomas! Thank you for sharing these with us. I am struck by the beautiful folk crafts that seem alive and well where you were visiting. The embroidery on their clothing, the painted eggs, the hand-crafted amber beads. Just very beautiful.
