One of my main teachers for this style bead was a Bactrian bead I bought from David Ebbinghouse at Tucson. I would sit every night while visiting with Suzi and fondle and feel the bead, I find that feel is one of the most important aspects of any bead and have always used this criteria when making beads in the studio. I have always said if I can get one of my pieces in someones hand I stand a much better chance of selling it.

This bead is 100% hand made (yes I use machines) and I have hand finished it rather than machine sanding and polishing it. I think in doing this it puts the bead in its own category and gives it a true old look.

This bead is made with Arizona petrified wood its measurement are.
40.5mm long and 11.5mm at its widest diameter. Hole size 4mm

All my best ...... Danny

P.S. I am calling this new series "Lopacktrian", I have to give them something to think about

is elegant indeed! I agree with you, Danny, the feel (weight as well as texture) of a bead is right up there with the other aesthetic features of a bead.

MY MOST DELICATE BEAD EVER

In this new endeavor with ancient style inspired beads I have been experimenting with how to make certain shapes, this bead was a lead up to the petrified wood bead. I have to say that this is without a doubt the most delicate bead I have ever made.

This bead is made of agate and I am most happy with the look of the final piece, it has extremely thin walls (1mm) and only weighs in at 9.5 carats (less than two grams).

Bead size 35.5mm long 9.6mm at largest diameter 4mm hole

Hope you like it ....... All my best ......... Danny

Danny, both the petrified wood and the agate beads are incredible. I can feel them in my hand just by looking at your photographs. And I agree about the feel of a bead, I have always been so impacted or affected by how a bead feels in my hand, whether it be old silver or a fabulous worn stone bead, etc..etc.

You are very talented....Please show us if you use either of these in a necklace or finished piece. Would love to see! Lynne

Martine,
I heard Art Seymour asked that exact question by someone at the Tucson and I truly loved his reply "About forty years". For me its "About thirty six years" seeing as though I made my first stone beads in 1979.

In all reality it takes hours and hours, I told a friend that if someone were to come to watch me make a bead like this they would leave out of boredom just waiting for the hole to be drilled, and this would come after cutting the bead blank from the piece of rough stone.

I used to keep strict track of the time I spent on my projects but then it dawned on me that I was after the finished piece and it pretty much did not matter how long it took. The most time I ever spent on a piece I kept track of the time on was around 160 hours this was a necklace and not just beads. I think it was the piece in the image below, this piece was made around late 1984 or early 1985. The beads in this piece were 3/8 inch in diameter to give you an idea of how small the pendent is.

All my best .... Danny

My friend sculptor/silversmith told me more than once that the hours put in a piece can never be reflected in her selling price if she ever wanted to sell something. I guess that is why passion is a big prerequisite to be an artist.
