There is always a perception of value in where we sell beads. The same item would never sell on eBay for this price that you see in this link to a Christies' auction.

Because the "rich folk" don't surf eBay!
I put 3 kids thru college selling antique medical instruments to museums and collectors that just couldn't be bothered to look for themselves!
...thankfully!

a few years ago i knew of a wealthy collector based in the Gulf somewhere who needed help assembling a collection of top examples of ancient/mid east/islamic era beads. i couldnt help but i wonder if they were bidding for some of these? it may have been for a museum...
