Rachel, after grabbing a magnet, i can say that the fringe beads are definately steel, and of the 200 or so antique purses I've looked at tonight, I have to agree that the fringe is probably added.
Carole, I've added a pic of the backside of the beaded panel. Never having crocheted or knitted I'm at a loss. Is it a clue?
Thomas, I never would have looked for an American Indian connection, thanks! The deerskin looks braintanned by the color and softness, no french silk here!
I'd originally picked it up at the flea market with a mind to resell it, now I'm looking for a case to display it instead!
Shame it's in such a sad state.
