Back from Morocco...Sunday show and tell...

I do not know, how many of this threads I did during the years, but the more I do, the more difficult it seems, to find nice images (and beads) and scenes, I haven´t shown before. But it´s all for my fun too, so here we go...Venetians, adornment, Morocco (Mirleft, Tiznit, Marrakech).

The elbows are very small in diameter, 7.2-8mm, more unusual for the Millefioris

Mirleft, a new mosque, inaugurated the same day.

...love all these blueeyed versions...

The only image with enough blue for the theme...one of the beaches from Mirleft; I see a face there, asking himself “When will I ever have a look to the right or left...”

Not that rare, but harder to find in that quantity for me, while most of the offered strands are mixed Venetian patterns...

Animation at the beach: the man in the middle is not the teacher of this class of students from Mirleft on a Saturday afternoon. He is from Agadir, visiting Mirleft, met this class on the beach and asked the teachers, if he should make some animations with the students. All together had a lot of fun...

2 nice Millefiori with interesting longitudinal layed canes, some composite...the applied canes from the left one reminds me of a monkey face.

Since I learned, how Millefiori canes are worked out, I am fascinated, that so much molded and drawn versions exist in composite versions too in smaller numbers. For all Venetian Millefiori lovers the “Unfinished Symphony”, I-IV, from the Picards about composite beads is a “must”(and it is still growing...), as well as Jamey Allens article “Canes for Millefiori work” (see the links)

Tiznit, still siesta, too early for shopping, time for photos...same street, different views

All rectangular shape, unusual purple/blue the left ones; yellow based and with white and yellow centers in murrine the ones at the right. Their last layer of the murrine is tricky to the eyes– it looks green in hand, but with a magnifier it´s clearly blue...

Same street from the last image; a very small shop in Tiznit, outside the central “silver souk”; the shop is full with two visitors, but the owner family is very friendly, even (or because...?) we don´t understand a word of each other. I never leave this shop without a special find, beads from the crowded plates or a nice Talhakimt or adornments of leather from Mauritania. To bargain here means for me, he is writing a price on a paper, than I scratch it and write a lower, he, me, he, me ...In the end everyone is lucky, and the paid price is mostly much lower than it would be in one of the antique shops inside the silver souk.
Sarah, he has as well mostly some nice old silver Berber pieces...! When you come through the left wall gate, first street to the left, 100m to the right is the shop.

All beauties...the close up bead is, as far as I can see now, while sorting is going on, the only bead type (murrine) from this trip, I had never in hand before. But I found it quickly at the “Unfinished....” from the Picards....

If there ever was a clear 7th layer outside, it is completely gone (nothing to see even with 60x magnifier, very cool for small beads, with light, very cheap from China).
Could it be as well as the similar 7-layers from the 1600/1700s...??
And Thomas M., it´s likely, but not same...the blue layer (under the stripes, covering the white layer) is missing....

Marrakech, Djemaa El Fna, from 1916, 1926, and 2 x 2012, with the Koutoubia mosque....

Since four or five years the price for amber beads knows only the way up; the latest rumor is, that people from China buy all they can get, for making medicine of it in China. Fact is, there is much less of it than the years before....29 x 25 x 23mm the largest repaired bead

Marrakech inside medina; shop from Abril and his son Abdul, both very nice, many treasures to find here...
Sarah, if I had known, that you were there the same time, I would have come earlier! But it was so hot before, that I did not want to travel, and when I did, your message reached me only, when I was back in Mirleft (and that happened only, because the two internet shops in Marrakech I had known, were closed and I was too lazy to search for that evening...)

Hej Uwe,
I am amazed of all the variety you manage to bring everytime! Great pictures of Mirleft as well.
If this picture is of the spice/slave market of Marrakech, than I have dwelled in that shop many hours in the past. On the market at dusk there often was a chart selling nicely spiced cooked snails. Supposedly very good for women. So hilarity all around when Ward would stand in line awaiting his turn amidst all the women.

Adornment and a hammer
Re: Back from Morocco...Sunday show and tell... -- Uwe Post Reply Edit Forum Where am I?
Posted by: Uwe Post Reply
06/10/2012, 03:19:51

Left side are bands of leather with agate Talhakimts, carved conus shells, silver southern crosses, silver pendants and coral beads, from Mauritania, knotted in the hair usually.
To the right a rarer sugar hammer. Sugar and salt was transported through the desert molded into blocks and very hard, so the consumers needed something to knock portions from those blocks. The Berber versions of these hammers are bigger, different figured and made of brass. This one is a smaller version, beautiful and typical Touareg decorated and from unknown metal (it´s more brighter from color, not that yellow as brass).
60cm the leather stings, 21cm the hammer

Marrakech at night with the Koutoubia mosque: The question comes up, which way headless ghosts orient themselfs...a moment later she was walking right through me....:-)

Other adornment, I could not resist....the Mauritanian head band was repaired with mostly plastic beads (red and white)...

Sometimes, when the traders from the shops open one bag after the other, with beads, I feel like this bee will feel – in paradise....cactus honey has the reputation, to be very healthy...it tastes so...

That´s it for now...I hope, you could enjoy! Have a great Sunday!

With the years I know my traders and send messages, some weeks before I visit them. Some types of beads became much rarer over the years. The "typical" 6-layer chevron for example are nearly gone...
Beads are often not displayed in the shops, but sometimes, when you ask for, they can show you plastic bags full with beads...But this is only for "Tiznit" and Marrakech, maybe Essaouira as well. I don´t know about the places more in the north...

Hi Joyce,
I follow this counting since days and it went up by hundreds from one day to the other, so I believe there must be something wrong. It´s flattering, but I have no idea how it works (my technical knowledge is very limited...), and the only explanation for me is: It´s not real...!
That titles of threads have more clicks than the following posts is usual, that posts with images have more clicks than those without images is usual as well...but these differences here are inexplicable large. Another mystery I noticed is, that the second highest number, Martine (karavanserai, "Re.Amber beads"), is at 327 now, and his post is without an image!! This is against all known rules...:-)!!
Even if someone with hundreds of "friends" has posted a link on Facebook, this would not clarify the large distance between the title and the following posts.
"When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth", Sherlock Holmes, and this means here: Computers are liars!!

There is so much here with the beads, the views and the travelogue that I have returned to read again and again.
Thanks for the trip!

but don't know exactly how. David found so far that the view-all link must be posted somewhere, perhaps Pinterest? Someplace on the net, folks are finding a direct link to this thread. I'm curious too! Maybe David can find where later.

I recently added some of Uwe's pix to my Pinterst boards but I think the jump in visitors started before I added any.

Do a search on Pinterest using just the word Beadcollector.
You'll see where Uwe's photos are pinned as well as a link to BCN.

Hi Paula,

Would you believe I didn't even know about Pinterest until Russ sent me a link a month or 2 ago?

Yes, there are a lot of bcn images being viewed, pinned, re-pinned. It's very interesting! And while bloggers and pinners don't always mention where it came from, you can always click an image, and keep clicking, and eventually you get taken to where the image started. So I'm not really bothered by it, I find it pretty interesting, and it is obviously fostering continued interest in what we call "good beads"!

As has been discussed recently, the only time I object is the use of someone else's images for profit / sales. That's where the line is drawn.

I am still mystified by the literally 3000 visits to Uwe's thread though. Perhaps a couple of netheads with a L O T of time on their hands have time to just click hundreds of times over per sitting just to make me scratch my head and wonder....
