Hello,
i hope you are all doing well and my best wishes for 2022.
Recently i found this 2 unusual small glass beads from the African trade.
Size 7 x 13mm and 18 x 10mm. the smaller with the inner core of a chevron and outside eye motifs. The second one made out of melted chevrons?
I hope to get some opinions about this beads.
Thanks and greetings from Germany, Christian

Hello Christian,

These are indeed rather odd beads.

The left specimen is clearly based upon an early 7-layer rosetta bead—and seems to have been overlaid with pieces of Mali millefiori eye beads (that would be about 1,000 years old—so older than the base bead).

The right specimen is more difficult to interpret, since the base is not clearly recognized by comparison. And, also, the chevron beads are not very typical nor easy to ascribe to a time and origin.

I have run your photos through Photoshop, to enlarge slightly and show both views together.

They are both rather curious! Jamey

Hi Jamey,
thank you for the image processing and your explanations.
Since both beads were found in Ghana, I could imagine that the beads were recycled from old beads in Ghana, because the knowledge and techniques for this are known there for a longer time.
regards, Christian

That these might be "recycled" in Ghana is certainly a possibility. Please review past dialogues on this topic—which is one of my special interests.

What makes your beads interesting is that they cannot be compared to other beads of this genre, that I have documented.

JDA.
