So I won these beads at an auction, was surprised there was only one other bidder, as the Japanese seem to be extorting surprising sums for them on eBay and Etsy. After shipping and handling, they came out to about $10 each.

Don't have them in hand yet, but guessing they're in the usual 20mm range. Auctioneer described length as 17 inches.

What I wonder, seeing how they're strung, is whether they are not part of a necklace that's missing its clasp, but are instead a remnant of a longer string straight from the workshop - that is, this is how the beads were strung for resale to those using them for whatever purposes.

Further bulletins as events warrant, I guess. . .

Hi Chris,

Good score!

I have one of these that is 23 mm in diameter. My dragon is similar, except with green feet.

I paid a lot more than $10. for it (!).

J.

Here are four views of my bead. In the right view it's posiible to see some enamel loss.

Only two beads had dragons with the whites in their eyes instead of the solid black eyes that seem to be more common in this bead design.

One bead seems to have been made by a different person, as the dragon is better proportioned, colored differently, and with different cloud spirals. The background enamel is a slightly lighter green, and the end circles around the holes are royal blue instead of the turquoise on all the other beads.

The original knotted thread seems to have been light blue. I haven't burned a snippet to see if it's silk or nylon.

Measurement hole-to-hole varies around 20-22mm.
