Many African brass beads are cast via the Lost Wax method. First a model of the bead is made using wax "wire" (probably around a friable core that is later removed). This is covered in slip and prepared to become a mold. The wax is melted out, and molten brass is poured in. (That's the big picture.) I cannot tell you who made these unusually small brass beads, nor what their local name would have been. Unfortunately, this is not the sort of information that bead sellers acquire and pass along to collectors. Plus, you know, most beads do not have names. Some have descriptions. JDA.

Sad there's no easy way to find them, but I'll keep trying! And treasure the few that I have. Thank you, Jamey!

I have some those strands in moth of your links. Mine are a LOT smaller, but those are both companies I've bought from in the past, and it would be a good idea to check in with them! Thank you for the inspiration!

I checked in with Happy Mango and Picard Beads, and Picard Beads answered within minutes, saying they had something similar! I quickly ordered several strands. So happy to find more! Thank you, Jamey, for the ID, and Logan for reminding me of favorite sources!!

the first beads are from Nigeria and measure in length 34.7 mm to 40.3 mm.
The second picture shows beads from the Ashanti tribe in Ghana, they measure in length 31.5 mm to 40.8 mm They are all lost wax cast.

-but its great to see an antique silver British threepenny bit!!
we used to have a Christmas tradition to bake one of these into the Christmas pudding and whoever had it in their portion would be lucky for the coming year...
the silver was pure enough not to affect the pudding,
so lets hope it brings luck for events happening this week for those of you in USA.

The beads Luann is seeking are VERY SMALL, and quite different from any of the beads shown so far.

I posted the pictures to show the manufacturing technique and to show that it was used in different countries by different tribes.

It would be easier to list the places that don't exploit this process. I must have missed the photos where the manufacturing techniques are shown.

Same gold color, I can use them in some bigger pieces.
Still looking for more really SMALL ones.
Fortunately, Picards are keeping an eye out for me! They are wonderful to work with!

Thank you for the redirect, the ones I'm looking for are made with a finer wire, and gold-colored. Picards reached out to me a few days ago, saying they'd found ones that were more like what I was looking for. I ordered more. They arrived today, and they are exactly what I was looking for! The larger version, but more slender in width. The ones in the pic are 1" long. Wonderful customer service! Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed I'll find more of the smaller ones....
