Bead Sample Card - probably Venetian

Here's a new acquisition - an interesting bead sample card. The distributor was probably the Sachse Co. since the letters "CHSE" can be made out at one of the torn edges. Time period most likely the interwar period.

These beads are interesting in that the hole size is relatively large for the bead size (3.5 - 3.6 mm) and the flat ends have been ground - shown in second photo - and left rough.

The dragged feather decorations are very fine so I think these are Venetian beads - but I'd welcome any opinions about them.

Rosanna
if you examine the flat end surfaces such as the one that you show- could the surface texture be the result of pressure onto a grainy surface resembling what can sometimes be seen on the end of Prosser beads?

No, it is uneven and clearly due to grinding

Plus there are shiny spots where the grinding did not touch the original glossy surface.
Sorry, this is hard to photograph such that it shows well.

I took some more pictures to show the beads with the most obvious striations on the ends. The marks all appear to go in one direction, making it appear that they were "dressed" by filing or grinding with a fairly coarse grind, maybe with just one pass.

The ends are interesting since it's a fairly crude finish for otherwise beautifully trailed, glossy beads. Perhaps made by a smaller bead shop where they didn't have a lot of good equipment for the finish work? Or for an application where they knew the ends wouldn't show, but needed to be flat?

I defer to the people who do glass work to comment on whether this looks like cold work that was done after the bead was made, or following Stefany's suggestion, something done while the bead was still hot or being reheated.

Note - I'm pretty sure the "dirt" on the beads and in the holes is from the disintegrated brown cardboard.
