Hello to all, long time no speaky,

I have an ancient faience pendant bead, possibly Persian or Egyptian. It is really neat looking, but I am having trouble identifying what it actually represents.

Maybe it's my ancient bead eyes, but what is it? I cannot determine a gender for one thing, it doesn't appear to have any male parts, but is it a female? Maybe a goddess figure. At first glance I thought it was a "Bes" figure, the Dwarf god.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best to all,

Jan Skipper, Mosquitobay

could it represent fertility and birth?
that bit "below" could depict an emerging infant, head downwards???

Thank you Stefany,

That could be a distinct possibility, sort of a fertility goddess.

Another thought I had was that it might be a Priapus figure and the part below was the enormous body part that he is typically equipped with.

I am still leaning toward Bes, since he (or sometimes she) is typically shown with a tall feather crown or headdress. Maybe he is standing on something or it was just filler.

Anybody else have a comment please.

I am barely making out a tiny head with outstretched arms emerging between the legs, head first, - unless my Old eyes are deceiving me also- always possible. The "woman" seems to have her hands up by her face...

Hi Anne,

I am beginning to think you both maybe right, I w ill do some more searching for a Goddess of childbirth although it is said that Bes is used as protection in childbirth as well and there is a feminine side of Bes as well.

Thank you for your input,

Jan
