Black and Blue Russians?

I found these at the flea market too - they are stumping me. They remind me of blue Russian trade beads I've seen, but they're jet black. The hole diameters vary pretty widely, as you can see; lengthwise I'd say they measure between 5mm and 7mm.

Whatever they are, I think they're a good deal for a dollar!

Wow I lucked out!
I looked up the Picard exhibit, thank you - had no idea before that these beads came in so many beautiful colors.
Would they have gotten here via the Alaska/Pac NW trade??
