I have been contacted by a person who bought some carnelian beads in Burma in 1985. He thinks they are ancient but they look fairly new to me. Can anyone corroborate?

A few years ago, there were a lot of these beads being sold on ebay, from Thailand, if I remember correctly. They were gorgeous, not expensive but newly made.

These all seem quite doubtful to me. It's impossible to be sure without seeing the wear and the perforations, but they look quite recent to me.

The carnelian is unlike the all-over colour of the stone that was popular in early Burmese cultures either in the Samon Valley or in southern peninsular Burma (from which I've just returned actually). You do occasionally comer across this kind of streakiness in an individual bead, but to find it in a group together would be unlikely.

The agate tubes in the centre are typical of the beads that were so valued in early first millennium Cambodia (the Funan Empire - see attached). But very few found their way to Burma.
