How to repair amber beads?

I was just gifted a lovely amber bead that is broken in half - so now I am interested in a way to repair it. In looking at pictures of traditional repairs - such as the one in this picture - I can't easily figure out how the wire zig-zags or curly-cues were applied. Does anyone know how this was done? Were the wires heated and then pressed into the amber? Was a groove carved in the surface first, and glue used to secure the wire?

Any ideas would be welcomed - and I plan to try some of them in advance on other small pieces of amber before attempting the final repair.

Hi Rosanne,
I would use small, red hot heated and bend metal strips instead of wire. It will give more grip than wire and won't fall out that easy. And doing, it will give a nice smell with natural amber either!
Curious to see the results. Best of luck, Hans

Any idea if silver strips will work - or do they need to be base metal?

It's a good idea and I'll have to experiment with different metals.

Hi Rosanna,
Word from Morocco: the traditional way is to make a groove in the amber, add 'a paste' ,then the metal is hammered into it.
No more details I am afraid.
