You will find this style of Japanese rosary in the book produced by the NCBS in 1978. (I'm still seeking that extra copy.)

Definitely not plywood. Apitong, is thought by some to be a low grade teak. When it was abundant it was used as a utility wood, crating & pallets. Manufacturing of wooden beads would be a logical use for utilizing the scraps. I believe the bands that we see are growth rings.
