Can anyone help me ID what kind of seed this is? The necklace is supposed to be Japanese but I am at a loss.

I cannot say Hans is mistaken. However, the lotus seeds I have seen are more spherical. JDA.

firstly, dimensions!
are they solid or hollow?
do they have any markings, even if faint- for example 3 spots at one end, like miniature coconuts?

My thoughts exactly (!). But I didn't see any coconut spots.

Sorry, I should have added this to my original post. The seeds are hollow and measure 10 mm x 16 mm. They are slightly shiny and most of them have a 3-5 mm dull patch on one end. Within this patch is a small spot (about 1 mm). I'll add a couple more pictures where this is clearer. They look very much like the lotus seeds in the picture hans posted just brown instead of green.

It's very possible that lotus seeds can or may have a variety of external shapes.
