Hello all!
This item is listed in our collection as Muslim prayer beads but the fish shape is throwing me off since that is typically associated with Christianity.
I am pretty sure the beads are soapstone and the piece was given as a gift in 1971 so it at least predates that. the whole piece is right at 9.5 inches long. Other than that we don't have much information on it. Have any of you come across something similar? Is it possible that these are worry beads rather than prayer beads? Thanks!
Savanna

on p.47 of my book: "Beads- a History and Collector's Guide" there is a photo of one that i have that must be a brother of yours -it has 11 sections. i found out its probably a Christian/Armenian symbol, and slate like this is mined in the area of the border between Turkey and Armenia.

i am trying to send an image...
my computer refuses to let me resize this photo...

Thank you so much for the info! I was starting to lose hope on this one. I can't believe that you have one that is so similar. Do you know if it was used as worry beads or was there religious significance to it?

Articulated fish are not uncommon, made from a variety of materials—often minerals and bone.
