Previous years, I planned a get together lunch. Last year and this one I have been travelling when this great bead fair takes place. So, I will have to wait until 2019, I think. Also, not to be missed: Hans van der Storm and Wil Werkhoven will give a presentation on Sunday, about protective amulets.

Last Saturday after a long time out of the running in connection with a cuff repair surgery finally able to make a trip to Amsterdam. And then of course to De Duif in Amsterdam for the Tribal Jewelry & Textiles fair. It was an encounter with many beads enthusiasts such as Hans, Hendrik and Martine. This time no joint lunch because each had his own appointments in Amsterdam. Big surprise was this time the beautiful catalog that the organizers had made and that each visitor got for free upon entering the fair. Also Hans caused a surprise by presenting two small booklets about Second Life Beads and Het Huis Ankeveen, which both concerned the associated exhibition with a selection of the collection of Wil Werkhoven on the upper floor in the Duif. Both booklets are printed in a limited edition. All in all it was worth visiting the fair. Hope to meet all beadfriends in 2019! As Nel mentioned there was the fair of 'Ethnic jewelry and textiles' (pics later) and there was a small but interesting exhibition on amulets in N and W-Africa organized by Hans van der Storm and Wil Werkhoven. Here are some pictures.

My last visit was 4 years ago and the fair has shifted its focus a bit: 2 main beadsellers were no longer there ( the Beadbrothers specialising in Indonesian beads and Ethnocraft specialising in trade beads.). You could still find beadstrands at Toguna, Khyber Gallery and Toubab Jewelry. Other sellers offered finished assembled necklaces. There are more sellers of ethnic jewelry and textile than 4 years ago.
I guess the pictures will speak for themselves.
It was a great enjoyable day. Here is some nice Bakuba beadwork

although 'Pieternel' only sells finished necklaces, the main focus is still on the trade beads in well balanced compositions.
At Toguna, you find strands, amulets, pendants to finish your own necklaces.

I know this is off topic but I must mention Peggy Kneefel who at her 'Asian Textiles' stand sells traditional textile from all over Asia and some silver jewelry. This is all I have to show and I know I did not cover all stands, so anyone who was there you are welcome to add some more pictures.

Hans also brought 2 showcases with some excavated beads from Amsterdam (after 1601 AD)and Middelburg (after 1581).
My pictures are not that good, but these shards were amazing. Amongst the Amsterdam remnants this huge piece at the bottom: dark blue with inlaid stripes.
In the Maastricht case , the bottom beads are not excavated beads, but belong to the 'twins' amulet exhibition. I am sure Hans could tell us a bit more about these excavated beads.

Hi Martine and Nel,
thank you both for taking, and posting pictures of the Jewelry Fair in the Duijf.
Did'nt find the time to take pictures myself so these are precious to me.
We had a good time and meet a lot of bead enthusiasts.
Till next year, we are planning new presentations (and booklets).
