And an easy souvenir to carry home in your luggage. This lovely beaded bowl is traditional Huichol Indian (Mexico) work. It's done one bead at a time, set into a mix of pine pitch and bee's wax. They used some kind of gourd for the base. This is one of the many kinds of amazing craft they do; some years ago a CAR was shown all over the web that two families covered with seed beads using this technique!

Watched a Huichol artist once upon a time in Tucson - they load the beads onto a needle

Instead of picking up one bead at a time and putting it in place, they load a needle with a line of colored beads and apply the beads in a manner similar to dotting with a marker. Smart!

Danny
That's a magnificent piece. Thank you for sharing it. I once visited with Huichol artists in Tepic and in Guadalajara.

What are the inset items? Hard to tell, maybe geodes, but a couple look like antler slices with some deer hair....? Peyote buttons....? :)

A bit of background on this wonderful piece of art.

We found this piece in the tent that used to be at the Rodeway show, there was a dealer at the back that had nothing but Huichol Indian work most of it was the typical tourist items and this was the center piece, I asked the vendor how much he told me and I said “I’ll take it”, that’s when his jaw dropped ........ The people from the Smithsonian are coming to see this. They never got to see it.

The inset items those with the deer hair have a seed attached corn and pumpkin(squash). The agate pieces look like chalcedony in rough form.

I have a large print out that came with the piece and will do my best to do close up images of it later today so you can read it.

All my best ... Danny
