Remember these? I learned of another possibility. The creatures might be colonies of porpita porpita, also called blue buttons. Apparently they float on the surface of the ocean.

"Porpita is found in all seas. It is pelagic, floats on or near the surface. Its size ranges from 2 to 10 cm in diameter. It is regarded as an inverted polyp-its body is discoid and contains a flattened disc-like, chitinous shell. The shell contains many air filled chambers and functions as a float or pneumatophore. Each chamber opens to outside by a couple of pores."

Birdi, how fragile are these?
And if one wanted to experiment, what is the "common" or "searchable" name for these?

They're a little like vulcanite disks in that they're fragile alone, but seem tougher in numbers.

This is the full strand I bought in a thrift store. They have some strength but are brittle. There is bare line so I assume some pieces broke. Most are less wavy than the one featured in the closeup.

IF they are porpita they are called blue button jellyfish. Or they might be the other creature Stefany mentions.

I could not find my original post (where I made some other guesses). I can't seem to find anything at all using the BCN search function.

I know it's not exactly the same, but it's got the same appeal.
I may try this with polymer clay.....

Sorry, no time for photographs, but I used to enjoy using bone disc beads with carved ruffled edges. They looked rad in earrings.... and are stronger than the little sea discs.

Then I decided to not use animal parts in my necklaces. I also stopped using white beads because I had been over-doing it with the accents.

I chose a labor-intensive pricess with polymer clay over carving bone ir mammoth ivory for the same reason--harming no animals, because I had this choice in our modern times. It felt....kind...over "authentic".

One of the keystones of my art is understanding innate concepts in order to make better choices. Choosing polymer (to IMITATE bone and ivory) over gone was my first step on that path. I have never regretted that choice.
