I didn't do many photos of Tucson this year, having done many in past years. Just felt more like trying to relax and socialize this time, and it was fun. But I missed Uncle Russ any number of times, the trader tables and BCN dinner were where you could always find him...

Special thanks to Rosanna, Bassem, Thomas and Matt this year!

Seeing everyone was just wonderful...although Tucson is a commercial event in every way, it is also an annual social event where collectors can get together from all over the world.

This year, BCN member Stefany Tomalin (President, Society of Bead Researchers, Coordinator for the Bead Society of Great Britain) made her first trip to the Tucson shows and BCN dinner! And, Shinji, from Japan, a member for a long time now, attended the BCN dinner for the first time. Also new to the mix were David and Marilyn Ebbinghouse, and Sandra from Yone, Inc, and returning for the first time in 7 years, Joy and Linda from Utah. We were 38 this year at dinner, and the Marisco's crew handled us with style and grace.

First, Stefany showing me some of the beautiful beads that belonged to her grandmother. (thx, Rosanna)

Next, a lovely little Czech rhinestone free-standing Christmas tree (about 4" tall) and vintage Japanese glass beads from Stefany.

While it was a very limited budget this year (no ancients...) one can still have a blast. Here, a tangled sterling wire bead from the Lou Zeldis collection at Gem Mall made from a meter of wire, 12 - 14g I would guess. And a little old, possibly antique Yemeni silver and coral ring from Wind River at the Pueblo show.

Next, a string of small handmade brass beads, Stefany thinks Turkish. And a chain made from antique recycled piano keys. The sea turtle pendant, made of shibuichi and brass with a sterling underside, is by Bob Burkett. I got pick of the litter on his way to "To Bead True Blue". He is now at Best Bead.

Goodies: Java Glass and Boshan Pinks

From beadworldbeads.com - they are the first importers of Java glass beads that I found out about, over 12 years ago. I think they are doing a great job of the floral lampwork, not so great with the filigrana.

The pile of not-so-new but not-too-old Boshan pink glass beads came from Tiger-Tiger at the Grand Lux. Are these likely in the 20 - 30 year old range?

From Floor, a wonderful California tourist cabachon from Czech republic,
and 3 old Czech glass hat pin tops. I found the soft dusty rose seed beads with a vendor outside Bead Carnival, straight out the back corner and across the street from the food area at Gem Mall. I'm quite sure the beads are old stock Salvadori, from Lyon, France, a color not available any more.

...and pink beads again... :)
When I saw this image, with all these notes and names of BCN friends on you, I really wished, to see my name as well, somewhere in future, may be... :)

The seed beads resemble Czech glass beads produced - maybe 10 years ago? Longer? Have to dig out my invoices, I have boxes full of them. Seriously. Kilos. Sizes 6, 8, 10, 11 mostly. Plain, rainbow, lustre, matted rainbow...

If I recollect correctly, the first production run was of beautiful deep pink beads, later beads were lighter, some with a bit of a topaz tint that the importer informed me was from overheating the selenium-colored glass.

To me, these slightly greasy, slightly opalescent dark pink beads are most likely the French Salvadori type. I will be putting the cards I got from Thomas from this company online, but it will be a while. They do not look Czech to me, but would love to see you examples in case I overlooked this type from the Czech Republic.

Context...

Of course, I can't be sure, but in context of the pile for sale...all beads were loose, not strung as Czech generally are, and along with these pinks were the opalescent lavendar, the greasy yellow, greasy peacock blue and some tiny aqua blue whitehearts - all beads that I used to order from Pierre Bovis, from the retired French factory, in the 80s when I used to work for General Bead. Not conclusive, of course, but to my eye they fit in with the rest of the group.

Right. The opaline greasy look is the tip-off.
