In an earlier post here I asked about radioactive beads, and beadiste replied about uranium and vaseline glass. I guess it was just a matter of time until I came across some among Mom's beads, and tonight I did.
They're yellow and green in normal light, and both glow yellow-green under short and long wave UV. I didn't try to get a photo of the glow, beadiste did a good job of that in his post.
I did check them with my Geiger counter, see the 4 photos below. I checked them 3 times: direct contact with the counter, separated by a double sheet of paper, and separated by aluminum foil. Since the readings were nearly the same, I'll guess that most of the radiation is gamma, which is more penetrating than alpha (stopped by paper) or beta (stopped by foil). Since I'm not planning to swallow them, or wear them as a choker or carry them in my pocket for long periods, I'm not worried about them :-)
