I suspect mine was perforated in modern times, too, but the breakage apparently happened long ago. There aren't any areas showing obvious signs of recent grinding (now that I look at it with a loupe) - but hard to tell. I imagine sharp parts would have been smoothed with a stone or something after the pieces were broken, and since they were sometimes set in bracelets without perforation it's quite possible that part is more recent.
