I want to remark that I have considered and studied these beads since 1978—at the time they were routinely misidentified as being "Roman." A proposition I have challenged ever since then.

In point of fact, along with Robert Liu and Peter Francis, we were the first researchers to purport that these beads derived from the Islamic Period—thereby (accurately) making their time ca. 1000 years later than had been supposed. In fact, I personally devised the indicator "Islamic Period bead," before anyone ever considered this possibility.

There beads ARE discussed in books! In addition to the article I cited previously, Delaroziere has composed two books about African beads.
