No expert, but I have seen many Venetian and other beads with trailed & related surface design that lack areas of glass- where the glass has "popped off" for lack of a better description, leaving a depression in the glass. I suspect the same happened here. Totally possible I'm missing the point on what you are showing! These are Pretty beads!
